EVERYDAY ACCOUNTS

Keep the keys to everything else. On a number you won't lose.

Your Google, Apple, Microsoft or email account is where every other password reset ends up. Give it a recovery phone that stays with you when you change SIM cards, plans or countries.

Why the recovery number on these accounts matters

These accounts sign you in to your phone, your email and most of your other accounts, and they're where password resets for everything else land. When you're locked out, the phone number on file is often the quickest way back in, and a prepaid SIM you dropped when you moved can turn that into a long recovery. Some providers turn VoIP numbers away. TwinNumber numbers are registered as mobile. It's a number for your own account, not identity verification.

Tips

  1. 01

    Add a passkey too

Where the account supports it, add a passkey, an authenticator app or a security key, and save any recovery codes, so the phone number is one way back in, not the only one.

  2. 02

    Switch before you move

Moving countries or dropping a phone plan? Put your TwinNumber on these accounts first, while your old number still receives codes.

  3. 03

    Lock down your TwinNumber

Your TwinNumber inbox now receives recovery codes for your main accounts, so protect it with a strong password you don't use anywhere else.

Questions

Does a U.S. number verify my identity?

No. It's a phone number your account can send codes to. Any identity checks a provider runs are separate, and you complete them with your own details.

Can I use the same number for Google, Apple and Microsoft?

Yes. One TwinNumber can be the phone number on each of your own accounts, and every code lands in the same inbox. Some providers, like Microsoft, allow a number on only one of their accounts.

Is SMS enough to protect these accounts?

SMS is a good fallback, but a passkey, an authenticator app or a security key is stronger where the account offers one. Use both, with the phone number for recovery. Microsoft is phasing out SMS on personal accounts.

What happens to my codes if my plan lapses?

If a renewal fails, the number is paused and you have a grace period to add funds and keep it. On the number that recovers your main accounts, keep your plan active.
