What Proton uses your number for

  • A recovery phone that gets a code by SMS so you can reset your password if you're locked out.
  • Sometimes at sign-up: Proton may ask you to verify by SMS, email or CAPTCHA, and keeps only a hash of the number.
  • Getting back in if you lose your two-factor authentication device, with a recovery code sent through a recovery method such as your phone.

Add your TwinNumber on Proton

  1. 01

    Open Recovery

Sign in at account.proton.me, open your account settings and select Recovery in the sidebar.

  2. 02

    Choose SMS verification

Under Password reset options, choose SMS verification, enter your number and select Add and verify.

  3. 03

    Verify the number

Enter your password, select Verify by SMS, then type the code and select Verify account. Recovery by SMS isn't active until you do.

Why the line type matters

Account providers often check whether a number is mobile, landline or VoIP before sending a code, and many turn VoIP numbers away. TwinNumber numbers are registered as mobile.

Questions

Does Proton require a phone number?

Not as a rule. A recovery phone is one of the recovery options you can choose to set, and at sign-up Proton says you might be asked for a CAPTCHA, an email code or an SMS.

Will a recovery code by SMS restore my emails?

No. Proton says these recovery options let you reset your password but won't restore your account data.

Can I get two-factor authentication codes by SMS on Proton?

Proton lists an authenticator app or a physical security key for two-factor authentication, not SMS. On Proton, the phone number is a recovery option.

Do I need to live in the U.S.?

No. TwinNumber works from 150+ countries with just a browser and an internet connection.

Is TwinNumber affiliated with Proton?

No. We test our numbers with popular services and publish the results. Proton is a trademark of its owner.

What if a code doesn't arrive?

Request a new code, then check your inbox and notification settings. If it keeps failing, contact us and we'll look into it.
