What Interactive Brokers uses your number for
- A mobile number you confirm while applying, which turns on SMS login codes.
- A one-time SMS code at each login until you set up IBKR Mobile – IB Key or another security device.
- The SMS activation token that sets up or reactivates IB Key in the IBKR Mobile app.

Open Mobile Number
In the Client Portal, go to Settings > Communication > Mobile Number.

Edit the number
Click the Edit icon (pencil), choose the phone type and country, and enter the number.

Verify it
Click Verify, enter the validation code IBKR texts to the number and click Continue.
Why the line type matters
Brokerages often check whether a number is mobile, landline or VoIP before sending a code, and many turn VoIP numbers away. TwinNumber numbers are registered as mobile.

Should I use SMS or IB Key?
IBKR offers IBKR Mobile – IB Key and authenticator apps alongside SMS, and allows higher withdrawals with them: up to US$1M a day, against US$200K with SMS. Keep your number current anyway, since IB Key activation tokens arrive by SMS.
I got a new phone. Do I need to call Client Services?
Not if you still receive SMS on the number you used when you first activated IB Key: you can reactivate it in IBKR Mobile with a token sent to that number. Otherwise, contact IBKR Client Services.
Can I use IBKR if I live outside the U.S.?
IBKR has clients in more than 200 countries and territories, so living abroad isn't a problem in itself. Eligibility and identity verification depend on your own details and documents, not on your phone number.
Do I need to live in the U.S.?
No. TwinNumber works from 150+ countries with just a browser and an internet connection.

What if a code doesn't arrive?
Request a new code, then check your inbox and notification settings. If it keeps failing, contact us and we'll look into it.
