What GitHub uses your number for
- Two-factor authentication codes by text message, if you choose SMS as a 2FA method.
- Nothing else: GitHub only needs your number when you use SMS for 2FA.
- SMS 2FA works in supported countries only, and isn't accepted on the sudo prompt.

Why the line type matters
AI and developer platforms often check whether a number is mobile, landline or VoIP before sending a code, and many turn VoIP numbers away. TwinNumber numbers are registered as mobile.

Should I use SMS or an authenticator app for GitHub 2FA?
GitHub strongly recommends a TOTP app over SMS, with a passkey or security key as a backup. SMS still works as a method in supported countries.
Why does GitHub ask for my password instead of an SMS code for sensitive actions?
Text messages aren't accepted on the sudo prompt, so if SMS is your only 2FA method, GitHub asks for your password there instead.
My organization blocks members who use SMS 2FA. What do I do?
Some organizations and enterprises don't allow SMS 2FA; switch to a TOTP app and turn off SMS to regain access to their content.
Do I need to live in the U.S.?
No. TwinNumber works from 150+ countries with just a browser and an internet connection.
Is TwinNumber affiliated with GitHub?
No. We test our numbers with popular services and publish the results. GitHub is a trademark of its owner.
