What AWS uses your number for
- An identity check at sign-up: AWS asks for a number that can get calls and texts, and sends a code when you choose Send SMS.
- The primary contact number, which must be able to receive SMS from AWS.
- Root user recovery if you lose your MFA device, where AWS checks this number with a call.
Add your TwinNumber on AWS

Open Account
In the AWS Management Console, choose your account name at the top right, then Account.

Edit Contact information
Next to Contact information, choose Edit and enter the number with + and the country code, without spaces.

Save the change
Choose Update. On the new AWS Settings experience, it is Manage profile > Contact information > Edit > Save.

Verify it by SMS
With the AWS CLI (aws account send-phone-number-verification), AWS texts a 6-digit code to the number on file; it expires after 5 minutes.
Why the line type matters
Cloud providers often check whether a number is mobile, landline or VoIP before sending a code, and many turn VoIP numbers away. TwinNumber numbers are registered as mobile.

Can I get AWS sign-in codes by text message?
No. AWS ended support for SMS multi-factor authentication. It recommends a passkey or security key, and also accepts authenticator apps and hardware MFA devices.
Can TwinNumber take calls from AWS?
Not yet: TwinNumber receives text messages only for now. AWS asks for a number that can also get calls, and it verifies the phone with a call when a root user signs in without the MFA device. AWS recommends registering more than one MFA device, so you don't need that route.
Which numbers does AWS accept for the contact phone?
Numbers that can receive SMS from AWS, entered with + and the country code, like +12025550179. Toll-free numbers aren't accepted.
Do I need to live in the U.S.?
No. TwinNumber works from 150+ countries with just a browser and an internet connection.
Is TwinNumber affiliated with AWS?
No. We test our numbers with popular services and publish the results. AWS is a trademark of its owner.
What if a code doesn't arrive?
Request a new code, then check your inbox and notification settings. If it keeps failing, contact us and we'll look into it.
