What DigitalOcean uses your number for
- Two-factor authentication codes by SMS, if you pick SMS instead of an authentication app.
- A backup way in: Send an SMS instead, on the Two-factor authentication screen, texts you a code.
- Nothing else: without 2FA, logins from a new device are confirmed with a code by email.

Open My Account
In the DigitalOcean Control Panel, click the profile icon at the top right, then My Account.

Set up 2FA with SMS
In the Two-factor authentication section, click Set Up 2FA, choose SMS under Choose Method and enter your number.

Enter the code
Type the code DigitalOcean texts you to link the number, then save your backup codes.

Switch numbers
DigitalOcean doesn't describe a separate way to change the number; to switch 2FA methods, it says to click Disable 2FA in the same section and set it up again.
Why the line type matters
Cloud providers often check whether a number is mobile, landline or VoIP before sending a code, and many turn VoIP numbers away. TwinNumber numbers are registered as mobile.
